What is the ME17.8.5 ECU in Sea-Doo?
The Bosch ME17.8.5 is the engine control unit (ECU) in newer Sea-Doo models. It controls injection, ignition, power limitation, and communicates with the DESS system. This affects Sea-Doo RXP-X 300, RXT-X 300, GTX 230/300, and other BRP models with ME17-based engine management.
Common ME17.8.5 Problems
1. Bricked ECU
An ECU is considered bricked if it no longer starts or communicates after a failed software update. This happens due to interrupted flash processes or voltage drops during the update.
2. DESS Error / Locked Immobilizer
The DESS system is integrated into the ECU. If the DESS post is faulty or key data is incorrect, the ECU can permanently block the starting process.
3. Hardware Defects
Water ingress, corrosion, or voltage damage can damage the circuit board. Typical issues include faulty capacitors, corroded pin connectors, and burned-out protective circuits.
4. Incompatible Firmware
Sometimes the ECU runs, but the firmware is incompatible with other control units. This leads to communication errors or restricted performance.
