What is the ME17.8.5 ECU on a Sea-Doo?
The Bosch ME17.8.5 is the engine control unit (ECU) on newer Sea-Doo models with the 1503HO and 1630ACE engines. It controls injection, ignition, power management and communicates with the DESS system. Affected models include the Sea-Doo RXP-X 300, RXT-X 300, GTX 230/300, and other BRP models with ME17-based engine management.
Common ME17.8.5 Problems
1. Bricked ECU
An ECU becomes bricked when it no longer starts or communicates after a failed software update. This typically occurs due to interrupted flash processes or voltage drops during the update procedure.
2. Locked Immobilizer / DESS Error
The DESS system (Digital Encoded Security System) is integrated into the ECU. A defective DESS post, incorrect key data, or a failed clone attempt can cause the ECU to permanently block startup.
3. Hardware Damage
Water ingress, corrosion, or voltage damage can physically damage the ECU board. Typical findings: failed capacitors, corroded connector pins, blown protection circuits.
4. Incompatible or Outdated Firmware
Sometimes an ECU runs but has firmware incompatible with other control units (cluster, iBR). This leads to communication errors or reduced performance.
